Ash Tree

In ancient times, the ash tree was associated with the god of the sea, Poseidon. Sailors regarded ash branches as good luck charms. Fishermen built their boats out of ash wood in order to feel safe from flooding. Although Bavaria isn't situated on the coast, ash is one of the most prevalent woods found here. They grow well in damp areas, but also in chalky soil, and yield a heavy, extremely strong and elastic wood. Heartwood ash is characterised by its strong graining and light-dark contrast. The core of the ash tree is darker than the rest of the wood. The strong structure of the core and the contrast to the lighter areas of the wood that arise from this have a vivid effect.
