Design by Laura Gämmerler, Pedro Sottomayor, 2023 | 2026The GEMA lighting family was first introduced by ZEITRAUM in 2023. Its distinctive ceramic shade was originally crafted in Portugal, a country with a long tradition of ceramic craftsmanship. The opaque white glass body is mouth-blown in the Veneto, casting a soft, gentle light into its surroundings.
GEMA has now been carefully reimagined. The shade is made from porcelain, a material fired at higher temperatures and greater density than ceramic, giving it exceptional durability. Production has also moved: from 2026 onwards, the shade will be crafted in a manufactory in Upper Franconia, Germany, in its new design.
The shade’s surface is finished with an engobe technique, in which the porcelain is heavily diluted and mixed with pigments. As a result, both the shade and its colored surface are made from the same material. The outcome is a matte, finely textured feel. GEMA is available in three sizes and in the colors sand, pale rose, and coal.

Laura Gämmerler
Laura Gämmerler (b.1994) is a German designer that lives and works in Lisbon. In 2015 she began her studies of design at the Free University of Bolzano in Italy which she graduated from in November 2018.
